Having decided to erect a greenhouse ( 8 ft x 20 ft)
in a corner of the garden ( 1/3 acre), I spend the holiday weekend building a base for it.

I rang the CO and planning this morning, just in case, and expected them not to butt an eye lid to my " curtesy " call and proposal, only to be told that any greenhouse larger than 10 cubic mt. needs planning permission.

Sod them, my greenhouse is 27 cu. mt.

What if you built 3, 10 cu meter greenhouses next to each other - would that be permitted?

I am surprised you got an answer from them as I tried for 3 weeks to speak to the CO not one returned call even wrote 2 letters!!! I know they are busy but so am I.

Even longer to get some new recycling bins - still waiting after 5 months. what about the Dunmow tip turning into a Travelodge!!!!!!

I gave up waiting on the bins, I phoned and they said the best bet was to just pop in to the saffron walden council offices/black hole.. got some no problem.. of course they were nicked as soon as I put em out mind you.. :-

I find it somehow poetic that Dunmow tip is turning into a Travelodge.

After all, so many Travelodges have turned into tips.

The one at Halifax is part of the re-use of the Dean Clough Mills complex.

Great re-use.

Not sure about that greenhouse though - is it an enhancement of the Conservation Area?

The 10m thing for outbuildings of a non-permanent nature eg greenhouses and sheds is pretty standard across the country.

I don't think they need rubbish tips any more.

They ship all our rubbish to the far east somehere don't they ?

As to the greenhouse I made the effort by getting a nice green coloured one quite low and hidden away from everybody.
I know is not an ideal subject for a conservation aerea and is not intrusive at all.
Apart from this I love growing orchids and have done so for over 25 yrs

The CO did say that in principal there should be no problem but I need a formal application

Never mind ( more money for the black hole)

Here's Dean Clough - with 52 room Travelodge as well.

Amazing that it wasn't demolished - unlike the former Penguin sweet factory in Carlisle, a terrific building on a site currently being bulldozed by Persimmon Homes. The same firm which bulldozed a historic farm complex and clay dabbin diary building last year in Carlisle .

They call it regeneration. I call it vandalism. Persimmon Homes - you are a load of Philistines.

What price history?

Still, Two Sh*gs Prescott thinks it's all good. He visited Carlisle recently to unveil yet more plans to ruin Carlisle.

See post above - not the first time for Persimmon Homes; clearly. appropriate re-use of historic buildings is not on its agenda.

'Norwich and Norfolk Hospital

At this time last year, this case was just coming to our attention. To briefly recap, the Norwich and Norfolk hospital, designed by Boardman and Wyatt, completed 1874, was facing the threat of partial demolition. This attractive Grade II listed building is presently being vacated by the health authority, and the entire site has been bought by Persimmon Homes, who are intent on squeezing over 500 houses onto it. In order to do this, they propose to demolish the ward wings of this H plan hospital, and erect in their place new wings linked to a massive new block (designed by Broadway Malyan) behind the original administration block, which will remain stranded within the
new build

The issue here, however is not so much to do with the new build (which we consider entirely inappropriate) but with the Council's approach to
the entire application. They interpreted listed building law in a way which no one could quite fathom, namely that as only the administration block of the hospital is mentioned in the listing description, the rest of the building is
unlisted. This we considered wrong, as by law the whole building should be covered by the listing, even if not mentioned in the listing description.

We therefore instituted legal proceedings against the Council on the grounds that the ward wings formed part of the listed building as defined
by Section 1(5) of the Planning Act 1990 viz:

The ward wings were built at the same time as the main block;
The ward wings were 'ancillary' structures, fixed to the listed building ;
They were within the curtilage of the listed building.

At the end of June Persimmon applied for listed building consent to demolish the ward wings. The Council duly advertised the application
and granted consent at its meeting on October 4. The Council therefore accepted
that listed building consent was required and agreed to pay our legal costs.

While it is highly regrettable that the wings are to be demolished, an important point has been established and other handsome hospital
buildings where wings and centre form a single composition should not be sacrificed in this way.'

I forgot to say it was the recycle centre not a tip, I think the nearest is over in Herts (not my council) as it is 15 miles to Saffron Walden.

Funny you should mention that NT.

Due to the stable temperature requirement of the different species of orchids, I was going to sink 5 feet of its height below ground, with steps.

I chikened out at the last minute, a lot of work, a lot of skips. no time, tight budget and the house restoration to complete.

All this did not really bother me, it was the thought of incurring the wrath of the wfe that was the clincher.

Shoot, I've just started preparing my ground for a 14x8 greenhouse... perhaps I'll put it slightly behind the trees and hope nobody notices it!!!!
Or as it's second hand say I just found it when I cleared the garden...........
