'Green' mortgages and period props too

I know that the Skipton will also lend on period wrecks, which the N and P and Ecology will also.

Haven't investigated the Co-op.

Skipton gave up on us near the end and cost us a load on retention to change lender (£9,000).
We ended up transfering to the Yorkshire Bank who were brill to finish off. Skipton wouldn't come out to look either. So not happy

Well, the C+G lent me money to buy my 300yr old wreck. Though, if they had planted 50 trees for me that might have offset the 26 I've cut down from the back garden. Only 4 more to go!

We've had people here who have had probs with C and G - and sorry to hear about the Skipton and Hellifield, that's interesting to know. Thought they had been OK but sad that they gave up.

(Did the steam hauled Hellifield to Carlisle over the Ribblehead Viaduct yesterday - what a wonderful station! Hadn't time to visit Hellifield Peel sadly!

Great trip too of course, only one left to go I think this year from Kingfisher.)

I didn't say I was happy with the C+G - just stuck with them for the moment. Fortunately, they use a local firm of valuers who actually understand old houses and are of the opinion that money spent on the restoration of period features is well spent.

Did the C and G insist on things like injection damp proofing etc?

That seemed a sticking point as I recall. A couple of people had poor experiences.

It's all rather a lottery.

The C+G didn't insist on anything. I think they go with the valuer's report (who is a surveyor). Luckily for me he thinks dpcs and bpms detrimental to properties like mine. I can imagine that if the valuer was an idiot (like one or two of the building control officers I'm avoiding), I'd be in deep trouble!

Mostly valuers are surveyors, but chosen by the BS concerned.

As I said - it's a lottery.

You may get one with period buildings expertise and you may not.

No doubt it's a lottery. The valuer I've hit the jackpot with even goes on the use of lime in restoration, and took the time to explain to me exactly why I was under no circumstances to inject a dpc into my walls.

It's always useful to ask the BS if the valuer appointed has expertise and the sort of extra qualifications which ensure that he or she can deal appropriately etc and not simply leave to choice to them.

Unfortunately, it's often too late by the time would be purchasers recognise this.

However, a valuation report and your own survey are different things. You can choose who to appoint for a survey in that case.
