Looking out of the kitchen window this morning, I spotted a green patch low down on the Suffolk pink of the corner of the garden room. Very unsightly, it was.
Further investigation revealed a series of such patches along the eastern wall (not visible from inside the house). They looked for all the world as if someone had poured liquid from a bottle or similar (no, I hadn't been out there with the beer). Most were a foot or so long, down to the bottom of the lime where it overhangs the bricks beneath. They were about a couple of inches wide, narrower at the top.
It was pesky cold out there, and I didn't think to photograph them before I brushed off the loose green (which looked like the algae that used to grow on the wall by our pond in the other house). I washed the rest off with warm soapy water, which removed the green but left some slight dark patches where the worst of the green had been. My washing didn't seem to remove any lime (the water went green, with no hint of pink).
They appeared only in the last few days. It hasn't been any wetter in the last few days than the weeks before.
Could this have been algae? Why would it grow on a lime wall - but only on the eastern side of one part of the house? There's none on the kitchen or the lounge wall, for example. Should I be worried?
