What's the best excuse you've heard from a builder on why he can't work Friday afternoon.

Mine, yesterday... "I've got to push off now." Me: eyebrows raised. Builder: "Maypole dancing". Me: eyebrows raised even further.

Mondays always seemed to be a problem for some bricklayers I hired a while ago. They had a range of inventive excuses before finally coming clean and admitting that the reason for not turning up was closely linked to being in the pub for most of Sunday, as if I hadn't already guessed! Still, they were paid to do the job and not by the hour, they did a decent job from Tuesday to Friday so I wasn't too fussed.

Isn't it either a bit late for maypole dancing or a bit early to start practising.......................... maybe a true craftsman will say it's never to early to start practising!!

Some years ago:-

11.47am Friday: "Sorry I've got to leave early today, but there's a dear old lady in our village who needs a new lock fitted to her front door. She's very hard up so I'm doing it free, as a favour."

Yeah - right! It sounds like just another POETS day excuse, to me.

Or am I a terrible cynic?
