Good book on how to wallpaper?

In the next few weeks I will be starting the hanging of my hand printed wallpaper. I have wallpapered before, with reasonably good results, but I want to make sure I do everything right this time.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

If the paper is really expensive, flock or the room is very non standard...it's worth the investment in a professional decorator for the best results.

If you really do want to do it yourself, I would recommend lining the walls first...both to improve the finish and get yourself back in the swing of things.

The lining was finished at the weekend. I have still to finish the fake oak graining on the woodwork, then can start the wallpapering proper.

Handing the work over to a pro is obviously the sensible thing to do given the vast expense of having the paper printed.

However I have done so much of the work on the room myself - floor repairs, replastering in lime of quite a few square meters of wall, cleaning and repairing the cornices, replacing missing bits of skirting and architrave, making replacement shutters, final fit electrics, distempering, woodgraining - that I cant allow someone else to deliver the coup de grace!

I have found a few wallpapering titles listed on bookfinder.com. Some are fairly cheap so I might just order one and see what its like.

I can see the attraction of finishing the job yourself having come so far with your own fair hands, but remember than any reputable paperhanger will have insurance which could prove handy if, heaven forbid, there were to be a disaster.
It's one job I absolutely hate doing, and which I gladly leave to the pros.

When we were thrown in at the deep end and had to learn to wallpaper - we took advice from our friend who was at that time a painter and decorator who used to hang fine papers in stately homes etc..

He recommended pasting only one piece of paper at a time, and timing it to soak for the exact amount specified by the manufacturer - rather than the usual method of pasting 3 or 4 strips and then hanging them. This way, they all have the same amount of stretch and piabilty. If however you paper 3 or 4 pieces, by the time you get around to hang the last one, it can often have stretched more than the others and this could of course affect the matching up of the pattern.
