Goat hair for plaster

Hi we've got about 1/2 a sq M of missing lime plaster in the bathroom. We've got the sand base and the hydraulic lime from a previous filling job. We haven't got any goat hair though! Is it really necessary? We're back to stone and it's an exterior wall. It's £10 for 500g online, they don't seem to be selling it in smaller quantities. Plus the postage.

Well, the book says horse, goat or hay for a scratch coat, but "ideally" a finer goat hair for the floating coat. You could always experiment! Perhaps a trip to the local barbers :lol:

Ok the ever wonderful Family Wiggs are posting me their polypropylene fibres, sold on most lime sites and apparently just as good. I'll send them some chicken manure :lol:

All the pets can remain unshaven.

I'm only using hair over stuff that will move around like timber frame and wattle and daub, or insulation board. For a stone wall I would not use any hair - there should be no need as it should not move, and if it does move you will probably want to know about it. Slap what you have on.

I had been using polypropylene fibres in the base coats I'd been mixing - Not a traditional material I know...

Thanks Malcolm and paulc! Malcolm I'm interested to read your post as I understood hair is used to make the mix bind together better and key on. When we've lime plastered channels in the past we haven't used hair and it's not stuck well.


Paul - thanks. Actually familyWiggs are now saying they can't spot it in the workshop but your post makes me think I can get it for a mere £4.80 down in town. Don't mind paying £4.80, £15 for a tiny area seemed a bit much!

Hi Joce,

In my limited experience the hair just adds tensile strength and helps resist cracking in areas of movement in the substrate. A really well haired mix can sometimes be rolled off the wall like carpet.

I suppose if a lot of fibres are at the surface of one coat they might add a little extra key to the next coat. I can't see that it will add much to the initial key to the substrate, this is mainly a result of suitable suction and needs the substrate to be well dampened.

If the chase or patch to be repaired is deep you should build it up in layers to allow good key and drying. If you put it on really thick the weight can cause it to slump or take an age to carbonate (if at all) to its full thickness.

I agree with Malcolm. I used no hair anywhere, which is just as well, as Giraffe and I would no doubt have looked strange shaved. Hair is for laths. Ty Mawr sell ready mixed base coat haired or unhaired, depending on what substrate you have. Having said that, I'm sure it would do no harm!

Ohh, another question. How long between coats? What about overall drying time before tiling on top?

If I remember correctly, the top coat wants to go on while the underneath one is still (green) ie you can dent it with your fingernail or a tool, but not just with your finger (or hoof, as the case may be).
How long to wait before tiling I don't know. Surely you're not organised enough to have the tiles all ready to go the minute the plaster's dry? That's not the way things are done round here, you know that. Once sufficient time for prevarication and KitKats has passed, it will be gone off enough. A week, maybe? Dunno really.
As the breathability of the wall is irrelevant because you're tiling, I think it best to use a standard tiling primer over the lime plaster. If I recall, I think I limewashed the entire room, then applied tiling primer where necessary, then tiles. The primer prevents moisture coming through and making the tiles fall off.

Just catching up with this now Zebra! As you can see things aren't progressing speedily at all! The bath tub hasn't arrived, despite ordering it back in November. Without it we can't really do anything.
But thanks for the tips! Will be sure to use a standard tiling primer over the lime plaster! Which has dried out beautifully!
