glass rebate

having a go at making a sash window for an outhouse.
whats the easiest way to cut the rebate for the glass?

we were going to use a router, but we cant seem to buy the right bit in any local shop.
found a pack of 15 assorted that might have one we need, but we dont want the other 14.
any suggestions?

Wickes do a set of 12 for less than most people charge for one. Gives you an idea of the quality but they have done the jobs I have asked of them.

Then like me it'll be lost forever, or at least until the day after you buy another set when you need another one and haven't been able to find them

Router bits?, not sold by my local builder/DIY/hardware shop (7 miles), not sold by builders merchants (9 miles), perhaps sold in Richmond (20 miles), actually sold by B&Q in Northallerton (26 miles away), available from Screwfix in two days. Guess where I get my mine?

All you need to make things easy is a 10 mm depth rebate bit , bearing guided. Adjust the vertical on the router as you require it then just square off the corners with a sharp chisel.
Axminster tools is a good easy bet, or any decent tools shop.

Charlie-ia,

Don't buy the cheap sets of router bits that are commonly available. These are often poor quality - and as you've found you still don't have the right size / profile for this job or the next.

Others have recommended Screwfix and Axminster - both excellent suppliers with next day delivery and comprehensive websites.

For router bits and sawblades I use the Wealden tool company:

Excellent range, industrial quality, but about the half the price of other industrial mfrs like Trend. No minimum order, and their prices include first class postage. They have never let me down yet.

More to window manufacturing than meets the eye - have you checked out local joinery mfrs to see how much they would charge?

we got a new window made by the village joiner when we first bought the house. took far too long and was very authentic looking.
i think distressed is the word, and was rather overpriced.
we decided we could do better ourselves. this windows only for an outhouse, so it will be good practice.

Making the rebates in the window frames to accept the glass is the easiest of operations. Accurate attention should be given to any mortice and tenons for the frames, using suitable glues,to ensure stability. Also ensure correctly dimensioned wood sections are purchased for the job( assuming you do not possess a planer/thicknesser).

If you contact your local timber merchants, they might have sash stock off the shelf, which for a first timer might be an economical way to approach this. If they don't then have a shop around the local builders merchants.

If you do end up doing it yourself, avoid cheap router bits. They are cheap for a reason. Routers are awkward beasts at the best of times, let alone when they have cheap dull cutters. Find your way to the Wealdon website as mentioned before, you wont be disappointed, they really are very good.

A third alternative is to have a local joinery company machine the profiles for you. At times like these, not many people are turning away work, you might be surprised.

you're all making me feel a bit shifty now.
we're cobbling it together out of some offcuts that used to be someone elses roof, and an old pallet!
we need a window on the shed now so that i can cook without having to move the tools off the draining board before i can even chop an onion!
i know that "if a jobs worth doing...", but once that windows in, life will get a lot easier.

dont mind getting a decent router bit though, cos there'll be more windows to make later, and we can do a proper job then.
