Glass for bathroom sash windows

We have a couple of bathroom windows to glaze in the next couple of weeks and I'm interested to know what sort of glass I should consider to provide a little privacy... I'm not a big fan of patterned glass normally - is there a typical Georgian or Victorian style?

I had mine repaired and they are glazed in clear glass so I used a film on the lower pane, to provide a little privacy.

I was asked what glass I wanted for the bathroom window when I had them made. I went with clear, im not much a fan of patterned glass although we do have some original in the fanlight of our front door. We will just have internal shutters on that bathroom window

You could always go for plain etched or sandblasted glass if you don't like a pattern.

The films are OK but they do peel at the edges eventually - I've one in the downstairs loo, so not as humid as a bathroom, it lasted about 7 years before starting to peel.

For glass, Pilkington's etched "Canterbury" was one I'd considered - looks vaguely Victorian to me and nicer than textured glass.

The bathroom in our previous house was double aspect, we had nets on the casements in the front. At the back there was a four-pane sash, in the lower two panes we had Arctic.

One of the oldest and most readily available 'privacy' glasses is Small Arctic.

There used to be a Large Artic but it was discontinued years ago.

Bear in mind that if you change the weight of glass in sashes it will affect the balance. The general rule is pound under pound over; the glazed top sash should weigh a pound less than its weights, the glazed lower sash should weigh a pound more. That of course is why glass used to be classed by weight.

As an aside, have you ever wondered why ceiling light fittings in bedrooms were often offset from the centre? Because there was a vogue for window blinds, it was to avoid casting shadows on the blind.

That's what we've got in various places - good to know what it's called, in case I need more, thank you. I need to decide what to fit in the downstairs loo when I refurbish the window - nets when we moved in, but I don't like nets - I stuck film up as a temporary measure, 13 years ago

Thanks for the responses. There are so many decisions to make at the moment it is good to get some advice. We're not really overlooked on the side with the bathrooms and I think we will only glaze the lower sashes with something... Nets are out, maybe arctic (this is fitted in the current bathroom window) but I quite like the idea of a moderate level of etching.

I shall pay a visit to our local glass supplier later in the week...

We have Arctic on our bathroom window as well (not a sash though, or original).
I like it, and if we had a sash in the bathroom with plain glass, I would probably change to that. (We don't have a listed building).
