Glass film

Was trying to find what the film is that's been applied to the glass at Lodge Park (Glos, NT) to make it appear old, and I came across this

I think they ran out of money...
Looking at the development of the restoration plans, it was originally proposed that the (entirely new) windows should have quite an elaborate pattern of leaded lights, but in the event the leads are much simpler, and to the (float) glass has been applied a film containing little bubbles that makes it look, well, old. It's not anti-uv film, because there's little in the way of contents. And no, the bubbles aren't bad installation, as I first thought.

Not only is the glazing new, but the stonework, the iron work, the whole fenestration.

For those of us stuck with float glass in our windows, the film would be a half-way house, and a lot less expensive and disruptive than reglazing.
Think I'll have to ask the NT where it came from, as I can only find patterned film on the web.

Ah - that bit I missed. First glance at the website looks like it's just some tacky fake stained glass. If they can make float glass wobbly, all is forgiven!

Hmm. A bit too wobbly for my taste, but chacun a son... and all that.
And, if you read the small print you'll see that they estimate its life as between seven and nine years, which isn't long, is it?

some of this colour film was used in an art installation in the forest a mile from where l live. After five years the plastic film is coming off and l pick up a bag full of the stuff every time l walk the dog in the area. Mind you this is an all outside installation

Interesting statement. So what would you feel about sticking fake plastic beams to the ceiling, or installing moulded MDF "panelled" doors?

I suppose my point was that I originally thought the link was regarding the simulated stained glass, which couldn't possibly fool anyone at a distance closer than 2 miles.
On the other hand, I could imagine a good transparent film being quite successful at close range, in which case it might be worth considering. I wouldn't be dead against it.

Plastic beams and mdf doors.. how about linseed putty imitation plaster ceilings?

The more grand places that I visit, the more I realise how fake much of it is. Grand plaster ceilings turn out to be Papier-Mâché, the huge stone columns are really brick or flint covered in stucco, marble turns out to be scagliola or a paint effect. The latter has taken to an art form in itself and, like all art, varies enormously in quality.
