All barn conversions nowadays must be black, that's not as traditional as you might expect , neither is Suffolk pink.
I have nothing against people wishing to paint their homes black or pink , I just dont think they should be given no choice and should be allowed to do as they please , within reason and within keeping.

Ah, but therein lies the problem - who is to judge what would be "reasonable" or "within keeping" if people were "allowed to do as they please"? That's the trouble with freedom - people do what they like with it. :wink:

I have no problem with barns and I have no problem with black barns. I'm less sure about barn conversions though.

As for house colours, surely it's only restricted in a conservation area or in the case of listing? I've never actually enquired but I suspect that white is the only colour that would be allowed for our listed house.

It's due to farmers using the traditional wood preservative, used engine oil, according to some telly programme.

I didn't believe it; whoever heard of a farmer changing engine oil?

When I bought my old tractor (a 1971 MF135) I immediately changed all the oils and filters. The engine oil was as black as tar and the gearbox/hydraulic oil was like pea soup because of all the water contamination. But it seems to have survived remarkably well and has proved to be totally reliable, even during the winter, although the panelwork dents and rust plus the missing lights does rather let it down cosmetically.
