Getting rid of old tile adhesive

I am struggling to shift a black, bitumen-like tile adhesive. Some tiles are stuck fast, and others have been lifted, leaving this hardened adhesive. I am using a floor scraper but would ask if anyone could recommend using any solvent or other method.

You could try Strippers NB510 or NB610, they should provide a sample if you request it, it's strong stuff mind.

We had a similar problem where lino tiles had been stuck to the quarry tiles in our old kitchen. We got it off quite successfully with Evo-Stik adhesive solvent - be sure you have PLENTY of ventilation though, it's nasty stuff.

This is the stuff. It takes time because at first application you just get a gloopy black mess - keep washing it away with soapy water and re-applying the solvent till surface is clear. Good luck.

Hi

I get to remove a lot of Bituminous paint/adhesive in my work. The key is to remove as much as possible by mechanical means, by hand with as sharp a scraper as possible. It is possible to remove the final residue with solvents (any petroleum based solvent, white spirits, cellulose thinners, xylene etc) but you would need to use so much as to be very, very uncomfortable even with a respirator (not to mention not very good for the environment)

Even though scraping may seem laborious it is just as bad using a solvent as all this does is soften the bitumen into a sticky black mess (whilst killing the brain cells of you and any passing animals)

NB If you must use a solvent to remove bitumin then apply a thixotropic type solvent stripper very liberally (pour it on) cover it with polythene sheeting and leave overnight, you may also want to leave overnight to avoid the fumes though! Then scrape off the residue the next day
