Hi,

just a quick reminder that Gervase, a regular forum user, is all set to appear in tomorrow night's 'Restored to Glory' at 8.00pm on BBC2

For those of you that are interested a review of the project can be found via the link shown below.

Let's hope the editor's cut gives a true reflection of the work undertaken and the reasons why certain materials and techniques were used.

Gervase - I'm puzzled by this -

"The woodwork be painted with linseed oil paint; again that will have to wait until the seasons turn and for now the windows have just been liberally soaked with linseed oil to last the winter."

because in your wonderful pictures all the new windows show up as white.

Well spotted Moo!
The windows, as delivered by the joiner, had been primed with International microporous paint, but that's now been rubbed down with wire wool and oiled in readiness for the spring.

We took over the place last June, so I've been 'at it' pretty much solidly for 17 months while my child bride solicits locally to put some bread on the table.

Clearly Schoolmarm, you need to get out on the streets more and earn some dosh to pay builders!

It was a matter of simple economics for us - to bring in skilled tradesmen would have cost £15 an hour minimum, and I'd have been hard put to earn that from a standing start in a new location, so it made sense for me to work full time on the house with 'erself as chief bum-kicker and progress chaser.
Of course, diversions like this forum don't help

Hi,

I watched the program last night and just to echo many other comments on how much I enjoyed it. I take my hat off to your family.

I particularly want to say well done to your wife for her plucky defence of her view on the stones above the fireplace.

After looking at it I think it would be better covered (as she eventually agreed) but I am fully with her in that it is your choice to make and if she likes it then go for it!!!

Some things are very clear cut and there can be no argument. I.e. Using Lime rather than cement render. Cement damages the house Fact.

Some things are personal choice and I felt the experts were putting their personal views a tad too much on the stones.

Yes if you want to have the building exactly the way it was then follow their advice, but as long as you do no harm then, other things are down to personal choice.

I laughed when she mentioned to the expert about going up his own backside.
