Did Georgian windows ever have shutters on the outside?
The reason I ask is that I have always assumed that my house did not have shutters. The windows are set on the inner skin of 9 inch brickwork so there can be nowhere for the internal shutters to fold up into.
However, I have been looking at a website called the British Newspaper Archive. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/
(This is an excellent resource if you are trying to research you house history.)
I have found a reference to my house and it seems that in 1861 a burglar broke in through “the sash and shutters” so it must have had shutters.
A gold watch worth £60 was stolen. That is about £6500 in today's money. She also had £40 (ie £4000ish ) in cash that the burglars missed!
