Thanks for all your comments, I'm afraid my typing is really rather slow hence the delay in replying..... anyway:
Nemesis:
The panels we envisage would fit into the existing row of oak plugs at dado height. Above dado height the wall is daub with a lime plaster finish which we intend to leave well alone.
We do not intend sinking new fixings into the fabric of the wall and are working on designs which allow for the panels to be removed entirely to allow for regular damp inspections.
Re C.O., ours is a poppet, we chat lots.
Penners:
Suspect you may be right regarding the quality, or lack of, acoustic dampening with panelling alone - so have been looking at acoustic matting and underlays.... These all seem a bit plasticcy (technical term) and I'm looking for an alternative.
We inherited some v.v.ugly secondary glazing but it's really horrid so instead, I'm trying to drown out noise by moaning about it - works for me.
Biff:
When we moved in we found the original shutters in an out-house being used for shelving..we hope to re-hang these soon.
Unsuprisingly, these make a significant difference to road noise and hey - who needs daylight? I'm pretty sure the kids could find the T.V. remote in a total blackout..
Thanks again to all, and sorry for my late reply...my typing is so slow I had to delegate to my husband.
