Do you remember that thread ages and ages ago when I asked your collective opinion on the desirability of television for the modern home? I think the consensus was it isn't attractive, but is necessary.

Well, we bought the requisite flat screen (ugh!) and the aerial fitter is here now whilst I do deep breathing in the kitchen. The top bedroom carpet is up, and in and out he's going with his 18 inch drill bit with no success yet in linking up the holes. I had no idea it would be so stressful!

And, a big hole in the Georgian cornice in the Print Room.

Still, perhaps tonight I will be watching live TV for the first time in my own home, in my life.

nothing wrong with having a tv , especially for films , home movies ,viewing photos etc etc.
its not so much the tv that can be a problem , its the person sitting in front of it that can cause the problems. ms robgil will switch it on even though she isnt even watching it , then its enders , corrie , enders again , desperate house wives. brothers and sisters , it goes on , and on , and on , and on.....

Goodness. She must have you wrapped around her little finger. Chris has already forbidden me to watch Strictly, and informed me that it will only be used for education and self improvement.

(I think he's jealous he didn't go to Oxford - he tends to read things like War and Peace very ostentatiously in front of me, and tut tut at all my, far lighter, reading)

Oh dear. 'Tis the work of the devil, but I can't persuade Mrs FF to get rid of the television, even though we rarely watch it and those programmes we do watch are usually time-shifted anyway. On that basis, my argument is that we should just use iPlayer and save £140 per year (or whatever it is) on the licence fee.

Let's just hope we don't lose you from PPUK as you descend into the morass of mindless daytime TV. Resist Joce, be strong. Switch on Radio 4 instead.

Speaking of rubbish telly......

Sat down with a cup of tea yesterday between jobs and watched a brief part of "Challenge Tommy Walsh" on some obscure Freeview channel (I know, I know.......)

He was busy using ordinary reclaimed bricks as paviors for a new patio - definitely ordinary red bricks, as he said they had come from a demolished wall of that house.

I thought they weren't frost proof enough to be used as paving?

(Joce - Tommy Walsh was the builder in the Ground Force gardening makeover programmes, no longer on telly but very popular in its day. Especially with certain men who appreciated another presenter, Charlie Dimmock, and her aversion to bras).

Don't worry, I love you all too much, and love writing too much, for that to ever be a possibility.

Actually I'm happy now. He's gone, and, after a few false holes, he was able to route the cable in the discreet place we had chosen. And, joy of joys, Radio4 is now on the television, nice and loud so I can hear it whilst scraping the woodchip off the dining room ceiling.

(sorry for the bra joke - anyone who's shopped there will know what I mean about their particular sadistic tricks - I have friends who've bled from their fittings)

5 feet 6 inches tall, according to wikipedia, which doesn't sound particularly "man-big" and scary to me.

Wiki also states that her mother and step-father were killed in the 2004 asian tsunami, which is dreadfully sad and reminded me that I was walking on a beach near Chennai a couple of weeks before it hit there.

Congrats / Commiserations on getting the telly. Admittedly, the channels are increasingly full of bilge (or repeats of bilge) which is invariably the result of pretentious thirty-somethings making programmes for their mates, BUT... snoot around and there are some good offerings to satiate the appetites of the history enthusiast (BBC4 and Channel4, in general).

Good god - what other possible reason is there to have a telly? I'm afraid I live for Strictly - the frocks, the splendour, the elegance, the chivalry and the hot raunchiness of some sexpot's Rhumba.

I'm afraid I live for Strictly

When I had bricklayers round last year - your normal, 30 - 40 something, tea drinking, tab smoking, hairy-arsed variety of bricklayer - talk each day was of little else. I'm surprised we didn't see them cha-cha-cha'ing round the piles of bricks quite frankly.

There are some good history programmes on as Christian says - "Yesterday" on Freeview shows some good war documentaries. "Dave" is one for Chris if he likes all the stereotypical bloke's programmes - endless repeats of Top Gear, QI, Have I Got News for You and Mock the Week. They also win worst pun award for their "same programmes but shown 1 hour later" channel, called... Dave Ja Vu.

Dave Ja Vu is quite a funny title.

Chris hasn't let either of us watch anything at all, as he's spent the last hour hissing and spitting about the positioning and fixings of the cable, and saying he's going to have to redo it all, or more likely, pay an electrician, as it isn't good enough. He is seriously the most perfectionist person I've ever met! I thought it was OK- not great - but fine!

I can't ever imagine him watching a bloke's programme either. The only thing I've seen him enjoy is Joanna Lumley's Cat Woman, and other programmes about kittens.

But hopefully we should enjoy the history programmes - and I'll have to sneak Strictly in when he isnt here!

you are probably right flyfisher , perhaps i was being a bit harsh on poor old charlie , i do have memories though of her in her steel toe caps and a bra less chest looking like a dead heat in a zeppelin race doing gardening work that would leave most blokes on their knees gasping for air.
