Gauged brickwork

How is that done? Do they build a perfectly ordinary brick wall, and cut away everything except the raised carvings? Or are the bricks actually made with the moulded design already in relief on their face?

If the latter, it must be an incredibly difficult job to make sure the whole thing fits together perfectly - even after firing.

I am not sure either, but I presume that the sensible thing to do would be to make a large cast of the relief and then slice it into bricks.
