When fitting a pane of glass to a window with putty, should the rebate for the glass be primed or left as bare wood? It never seems to be mentioned anywhere. Is the putty best on bare wood? Bare wood would seem to absorb the oil more, but is this a good or bad thing?

Holkham recommend using linseed oil first, then painting with shellac, glazing then painting.
This assumes you are using linseed oil paint of course.

I prime the glazing rebate with shellac knotting solution. Theory is that the oil in the putty isn't absorbed into the wood and so the putty lasts longer. Haven't done the long terms tests, but anything that stops the oil being absorbed by the wood should do the trick.
