What do people think of the wood colour? I intended to woodgrain it, but painting is such a ballache I am thinking of leaving it. I will also paint a dado. Probably sage green, and have a black floor with a runner. I think it will look better grained as the colour is a bit orange, and graining will make it deeper and richer, but maybe I can get away without it.

Colour, hard to tell, monitors do vary so much.
I suspect that having done the prep, graining wouldn't take that long, that said, you'd have to go back to white scumble as a starting point.

The black floor, is this a new venture, a night club? What will you call it - The Stairway to Heaven?
Black anything dunnarf show the dust. Had a black car once, never again.

Obviously the colour choice is up to whether you like it or not, but I think it is a bit orange looking. If the idea is to look like wood, I'd go for a darker mahogany colour. If you're complementing the wall colour to come then it may work better.
We've done a couple of rooms with the woodwork the same colour as the walls but a couple of shades darker. One of the rooms was french gray and the other a very dark blue(f&b Hague, I think?). In both cases the slightly darker woodwork looks good, to my eye anyway. Getting a bit trendy now though!

I like the idea of black/very dark floor, we have very darkly stained timber on the floors and it looks good. It does show the dust but we get over that by dimming the lights

I keep looking at it and I think I must do graining, the colour isn't quite right, and I can't imagine a flat colour would be with brown on white. However I am happy to use the brown as a base, I have done some experiments with this colour base and burnt umber in a glaze and it works quite well. Incidentally the colour is a match to a block of mahogany I took to the paint shop, so it is probably slightly less orangy in real life. The black floor thought was because there is historic old bitumen round the edge of the room. I must admit I have no idea how old the bitumen is, but I just looked at the thing and thought I couldn't face sanding staining and varnishing the whole thing, so black paint round the edge is an easy historic option, especially as most of the floor will be covered in a rug.

On a serious note; I would agree with the thought to paint the floor black after any necessary repairs to the surface. It will provide a strong contrast to any runners you might think of using.
