I seem to be having some trouble with my front door, but I cant figure it out. I guess it serves me right for putting a modern door on a Victorian property, but sometimes one must.
Relax, NT. There's nothing wrong with that door at all.
There was a fashion, in Victorian times, for what were called "footlight doors". They were regarded as very beneficial in houses where the floor of the hallway was rather dark - particularly if there was a step that needed to be illuminated.
Although a shining example of Victorian ingenuity, footlight doors unfortunately fell into disuse - probably due to the great popularity of the music-hall song: "Fanlight Fanny". This song took fashionable society by storm, and prompted thousands of people to invert their footlight doors, in order to make the glazed light look like a fan.
Congratulations on reviving a great British invention. That's the kind of admirable conservation practice to which we should all aspire.
