Front door for Edwardian London terrace

Hello - looking for ideas for style (and somewhere to buy) a new front door for our Edwardian terrace in south London. It's a medium sized 3 bed house, and it's got quite a narrow hallway so I think it probably needs some glazing - and of course I want something in keeping. The current door is the one that was on the house when we bought in the 80s - it could be the original but I doubt it - feels a bit flimsy, and the glass (two vertical panels) is certainly not original. We are just about to do a big renovation on the house, and it suddenly struck me that the flimsy door sets the wrong tone. Inside there are lots of original features - coving and fireplaces. Any ideas on images to look at for inspiration, and also suppliers? I'd love to replace the tiles in the porch floor too if I have the budget. Many thanks.

Hello, welcome, and whereabouts in South London are you?

Some pictures (see above) are always helpful, as is a stroll round your neighbourhood to see what sort of front doors they have. We're lucky enough to have a bog-standard original door with only the glass replaced (with the wire-reinforced stuff, for obvious reasons). One day we may get round to putting in something more appropriate.......

I would imagine getting a joiner to make something would be the best bet. Looking at neighbouring houses for inspiration is what I normally do. There are also lots of source books and even pattern books, builders manuals and construction books from the Edwardian period available, many of which are out of copywrite and so are available freely on sites like archive.org. Also since London is such a rich area, it seems lots of people are reinstating sash windows and lovely front doors, so the joiners in London must have more experience of what you are wanting to achieve than in my area where the last remnants of any remaining original features are ripped out in the name of progress.

Good advice there. The type of front door that will be appropriate to your house will depend on what your neighbours have (the ones with original doors, of course). This is particularly important in a terrace.
