In my reply I said "such as tyrolean" and did not specifically identify the finish as tyrolean.
When I was training and throughout my career I have always used the term tyrolean for a render finish that has the larger aggregate (usually some form of gravel/shingle) mixed into the render and applied to the wall so that when finished the surface is textured with an uneven finish but in which the individual pieces of gravel are not visible on the surface. This is then painted and has an uneven but 'soft' finish. My understanding is that such finishes were first used in the late 19th and early 20th century and often associated with 'arts and crafts' houses - at least where I trained and have practiced. I associate this finish with an early cement render but also can be seen with a lime render. I believe a similar finish is used in Scotland and is termed 'harling'. I sometimes use the term rough-cast for the same thing.
Pebble or Spa dash is different in that the render is applied to the wall first and then whilst it is wet the larger aggregate (pebbles, gravel or even shells) is thrown into it. This is usually left without a paint finish, but is sometimes painted especially as it starts to deteriorate with age. I have seen this on houses from the 1920s onwards and I have only ever seen it used with a cement render. It has a sharper finish and not soft as with the finish mentioned above.
I believe both of the above finishes were developed to give a finish that provided better weathering in harsher climate areas, but also because of the increased surface area brought about by the unevenness it is meant to provide a greater area for breathability (although when using cement renders I am not sure how this would really help).
The matter is perhaps now confused in that modern cement textured finishes (usually machine applied) are sometimes called tyrolean. This is not what I was referring to.
As with many building terms I suspect that for each of us the same word or term has a different meaning, especially when we look at regional differences. I hope I have clarified what I meant by tyrolean and apologise if my use of this term has caused any confusion.

Having looked again at the question and answer Gareth is correct in that they are totally unrelated. Not sure how this has happened. I do remember giving the answer about the render finish and I remember the question, but will check my original documents to see if the c**k up is my end of PPUK.

Just checked and the question to which that answer applies was submitted by a David Parry and was:
We have a cottage, approximately 130 years old which has pebbledash render in poor condition which we are going to remove. I understand that a lime render to replace it would be best to allow for 'breathability'. We would like a ‘Tyrolean’ finish over this but would this affect the lime render's breathability?
I will check with PPUK to see what has gone wrong.
