We've had to lower the ground levels around the house, in some cases by just over a foot. Part of the house has stone foundations which go deeper than waist height, part is brickwork resting on roughly shaped blocks of stone, and part is brick resting directly on the ground. (no foundations at all, so I've not dug that part any deeper). Lowering the ground level of the garden as a whole is not really an option, so something has got to fill the moat that currently exists.
I've tried searching for French drains on the web, but have found so much conflicting advice that I wondered if anyone had experience of them working properly. The soil is sandy and drains well, so I don't think a major engineering project is called for. Can I just lay a permeable membrane and fill with gravel, or will I need to line the side opposite the house with bricks to prevent the soil from gradually collapsing in? Would a layer of hardcore at the bottom help drainage?
Any tips gratefully received.
