A secret chamber, hidden for 400 years and with possible links to early freemasonry, has been discovered.

The entrance to the room, which has plastered walls, was found inside a cupboard at the National Trust-owned house Canons Ashby, near Daventry.

It is a panelled room with walls showing crests of local families and enigmatic symbols.

Laura Malpas, of the trust, said there was "speculation" the room had been an early masonic lodge.

What a wonderful story! I want to know why the discoverer felt the need to go snooping about the cupboard with a torch at that particular moment, I suspect he had something he wanted to hide too!


"Do not eat of things with a black tail" at first seems fairly sensible, no rooks, crows, blackbirds, mice or rats then - good, but I think pigs and ostriches can have black tails too, both of which are completely delicious, so I'd have been unable to join them.

There's something not very square or level about this story and half a lewis?? the picture shown looks more like an heraldic device to me, ermine perhaps, although they are depicted with three tails I think... 8)

Perhaps someone is just not very good at Latin translation? And I'd too be very suspicious about why he decided to go rummaging at the back of a cupboard at locking up time.I sometimes have to rummage at the back of my wardrobes but that's usually to extract a cat that's darted in there.

Doing OK, thanks Joce. Four more weeks in plaster with no weight going on it. Have to stay in bed or lie on sofa really as my hopping/crutch skills are rubbish. I haven't seen the kitchen for 10 days. Can't get up the two steps to get in there. Ten days, goodness knows that my husband has been doing in there but meals keep appearing so I'm not complaining. How's you doing?

I'd imagine that to learn to use the crutches you'd need a nice flat big concrete car park or something, and probably two good legs, not a twisty turny steppy period property, with one broken leg. It must be so so hard Vicky, I can't imagine no kitchen for 10 days!! Enjoy it while it lasts though. 4 days after surgery I had to do all the steps and get down to mine to feed the kittens and do the litter box. Your husband sounds great - mine was good for the first couple of days but then had to go back to work and I just lay here starving, but good for me really as I've lost a lot of weight, which needed to go. They said I'd need 6 weeks to get back to full strength, it's now 3.5 weeks and I'm well enough to lift a full watering can, and walk a mile (slowly). Hope your recovery goes well, and quickly, too.

Sorry for veering off Gareth's topic - but he knows we've all looked for Narnias at the backs of cupboards here and failed to find anything interesting.
