dont mean to jump in on your thread like this , but , a more accessible classifieds section may be an idea? perhaps a forum based one? 10 posts or more to post in this section? perhaps even a beg , borrow or steal section? for instance , ive got a cement mixer that ive bought to do a one off job with. joe bloggs up the road needs one to do a one off job , see where i am going with this?
a forum based for sale section would enable us to perhaps pass on that old cast iron cistern in the shed to someone who needs one , etc etc.

Interesting ideas - a more accessible classifieds section? I get the drift. Just wondering what's not accessible about the classifieds section that we already have on the Period Property UK website at http://directory.periodproperty.co.uk/classified/. We had the same idea some time ago yet it since we've had the classified's section it hasn't set the place on fire and we've been left wondering why not. Maybe our idea of having a classifieds section didn't resonate with PPUK'ers. Or maybe it's not as accessible as people would like. Open to comments.

I love the idea of a PPUK ebay and/or free-cycle. Don't know why the classifieds haven't taken off. Perhaps people don't understand what it is or think they have to be a company to advertise or that it will cost them money?

I had a similar thought the other day when I was out and about in our village and passed three empty properties. We have a lot of old cottages in the village which are empty (old occupants have died) and will come onto the market as soon as the Spring gets here. This must be the case elsewhere. Isn't there someway we could share this information so that if someone with a love of old buildings is looking to move to a particular area we can flag up some possibilities? I know we can't turn into estate agents but I know what will happen. These lovely, untouched places will soon have plastic windows, soffits and guttering to replace all that nasty wood and cast iron.

On other Forums they have something similar whereby those who post more than x number of posts have access to an additional section. However, in those I know of this extra section is for swapping and giving away/recycling and NOT for selling.
The number of posts by the individual needs to be high enough to stop the ocassional visitor - perhaps 20-30 posts before you get access.
Keep the classified section for SELLING and use the new section for swapping, donation, recycling, etc.
It could also be for simple notifications - like a notice board area.
I think the idea of a 'members' section is good.
I am not so convinced about the merit of polls.

Just an idea
Quite like the idea of polls. Usually just a silly diversion, more fun than serious, but can be useful. Just requires
admin to set 'allow polls'.

As for why the classified section's not really happening - maybe it's just because those who do want to advertise on the site have elsewhere to do it (unless I'm missing something here :? )

Should clicking on a link in PPUK open the link in a new tab/window?
My beef with this is it takes away the option. With the current method, I can either open the link in the same tab/window (by clicking on it - the same way as (almost) every other link on the interweb) or I can open it in another tab/window (by press the <ctrl> key and clicking on the link). If the site was changed so that clicking on the link opened up a new tab/window - there is no way for me to either to know it is going to do this or for me to anything to stop this behaviour.
One solution which I would just about accept is to have the links as they are now but to have a symbol after them which opens the link in a new tab/window. That would probably keep everyone happy though it would require a small bit of clever programming of the phpBB code.
