School floors in my day were coated annually with some sort of lacquer which used to start chipping and flaking off towards the end of the year.

I would imagine originally that school floors were similar to ship decks and were just regualrly scrubbed rather than coated in anything.

NOT Varnish or Laquer.

Both will flake and crack. You should use an oil or wax.

OSMO have a very good name.

If you do use varnish it should be clear, otherwise it looks awful after a year or so. Wax is higher maintenance, but does look nice. Until it gradually becomes a mixture of wax and filth, like old school floors.

I'd say a good quality clear varnish is the most practical.

As a teacher, i have seen the school assembly hall treated with an oily wax called "Bournseal" - This is done every year with the buffing machines usually in the summer hols.
Call into your nearest school, make friend with the site manager/caretaker and they may even give you some in a pot!
