I want to sort out the floor/floorboards in a room in my house.
at some stage it seems to have had hessian backed Lino glued across the whole surface. on top of that are random spatters of paint/plaster. No sign of the Lino, just it's backing, when I removed the carpet (which to be honest was probably worse than the floor below!!).
wait, here're some pictures:
As you can see, it's pretty messed up.
The hessian stuff (the backing of the old Lino) is, I think is glued on with a thick layer of old fashioned animal glue?? Whatever it is, it seems to be water soluble.
The best way I have found to remove this is to leave a damp/wet rag on it for 5/10 minutes and scrape gently. Or I can scrape the fabric off 'dry' and then add water and scrape rest of. does't seem to make much difference to ease/results.
Steam/wallpaper steamer works well too.
I am a bit concerned about scraping the wood when it's all wet from getting rid of the glue?
Below that, there seems to be a layer of beigey/browney goo that is removed a bit better with varnish remover or with turpentine and steel wool. But it does start to come off with water? (I think).
Does anyone have any recommendations for a sensible 'process' to take these back to the wood without sanding (don't want to make it look brand new/level)
Oh - and some of the boards are quite messed up and gaps are quite big - tempted to lift it all and relay side-by-side, using a few spare planks??
it's a bit of a mess, and its just yer standard victorian pine floorboards, but I don't want carpet and I figure this is better/more honest/ than putting in new hardwood/engineered wood flooring, or replacing with other reclaimed flooring, or whatever... I dunno?
