Hello
Ive read some of the old posts and visited Toby's site but am still not 100% sure I have things right!
Basically, I have exposed pine wooden floorboards in most rooms of my house, which is Edwardian. When we moved in they were uniform in colour and looked finished but I have no idea of it was a wax or varnish finish. Is there any way I can tell and does it matter?
I have assumed it was wax because we have had our four fireplaces restored and the internal chimneys rebuilt and in doing that the finish has virtually gone on the floors, surely this would not have happened if they were varnished.
Anyway, we are going to clean them up but from first glance they are not too bad so we were going to just clean them rather than sand. Is this OK, is there any other reason you woud sand i.e. is it easier to apply finishes and does it make them more durable if you sand?
As they are uniform in colour still (assuming the clean-up does not chaneg this), does this mean we dont need to stain them unless we want to change the colour? I am not sure if I want to stain them as I have no idea if the finishing product will also colour them but Im guessing they will say if they do.
So regards to the finish. I see Bona products are recommended. Also Toby's site mentions shellac polish and wax finishes, what is the difference? The floors get a fair bit of traffic.
Sorry for the stupid questions, there is so much information it gets confusing! All I want to do is meddle with them as little as possible but produce the most durable authentic looking result!
Thanks
Lindy
