Hello everyone, happy new year. I wonder if I could ask for advice about our floor....
We have a cold victorian detached house. We have repaired the sash windows, and in the spring the blown render is going to be replaced with a breathable cork-containing render which will hopefully help warm it up. Next project is floors.
We currently have very sad carpet on top of very sad floorboards. The floorboards are sitting on joists about 75 cm above the floor. The boards and joists look and feel dry and no sign of woodworm or anything.
I would like to have an engineered oak floor. I've had 2 people out to look. One said he would put a layer of real wool insulation under the floorboards first, the other said that with an underlay under the floor it's not required. The second guy is understandably a lot cheaper.
If we go just for the floating floor, what kind of underlay should we use? From my extensive reading of this forum it should be something breathable, am I correct? What should I be asking for? And would I regret not getting the wool putting down underneath?
Any thought would be very welcome. We have put in lots of radiators and with the new windows, the shutters and these it is turning into such a nice room. I don't want to mess it up now!
