We have uncovered an original flagstone floor which was previously covered by concrete and which is laid directly onto the earth. Having lived with it for a few months we have found that we do not have a damp problem where areas are ventilated i.e furniture is on legs but where things touch the floor damp patches occur and this has caused mould on some furniture. We are currently renovating this room and stripping all the 'modern' plaster back to stone and replacing with lime plaster/ limewash and were going to also lift the flags and put a damp proof membrane down. Having read some discussions it seems that this is not a good idea. Does anyone have any alternative ideas or have experienced and resolved the same problams? We are wondering whether sorting the walls out and allowing them to breathe will stop the damp patches occuring on the floor.
