We have a flag floor that is in poor condition and we haven't a clue where to start. It is splitting/shaling quite badly in about 50% of the area, it has been partly pointed with cement, one of the flags has dropped by at least one inch and one section has had the flags removed completely and filled with cement.
The splitting is worrying us the most as it is a constant problem - we're unsure what we can do to stop it. Do we remove the layers (with a chisel?)that are splitting by hand? Do we grind it off with some form of floor sander? How do we then stop it happening again? Do we seal it?
I don't think it has been chemically treated, maybe just a rudimentary polish in the past.
As you can tell, we're beginners and any help would be most gratefully received!
