I've bought a salvage cast iron fire surround but it's missing its fixings ie the little bits at the side where you screw it to the wall so here's a perhaps naive question. Do these have to be welded on or could they be glued? Also, I wonder to buy them!

I understand that welding cast iron is possible but a very specialised job.
You could try finding a company who supply and fit salvaged fireplaces and ask them how they get around this problem as it is not uncommon with reclaimed fireplaces that have be carelessly removed. You never know they may have an inventive solution that they are willing to reveal at no cost!
