Hi,
We've finally got to a stage where we can progress work in the spare room. The bathroom is pretty much finished and I'm getting REALLY fed up with living in a building site and the sight of dust everywhere!
We have removed the plasterboard (and the rubble) surrounding the previously hidden upstairs fireplace. The grate is very badly damaged (looking like the front metal sections have been hacked off at some earlier stage, certainly there was very little evidence of the missing bits when we were clearing). Although there is some evidence in the corners and behind another plasterboard wall of layer upon layer of hand painted wallpaper (lots of pictures taken!) my first reaction is that someone has tried to sandblast the fireplace as it is mostly exposed brick.
However, what remains is very dry and crumbly from years of being hidden away and being covered in rubbish. Can you advise of any way of stabilising the brickwork - as we would like to make it a feature in the room. I fear the fire will never be in working order - a quick glance up the chimney shows that it may have been bricked up at some time (may be part of the dividing wall between our house and the next one along)
Any help much appreciated!!
