We are restoring an old fireplace and have opened up the original fireplace, although the majority is stone some of the fireplace (including the front of the sides - which face out into the room) are made from firebricks which are damaged where the newer fireplace had been cemented to it. These firebricks do not look very good and I wondered if anyone has had similar problems, whether you can paint/apply a wash or sealer to these bricks....
