Firebricks...to paint or not to paint..

Hi,

We are restoring an old fireplace and have opened up the original fireplace, although the majority is stone some of the fireplace (including the front of the sides - which face out into the room) are made from firebricks which are damaged where the newer fireplace had been cemented to it. These firebricks do not look very good and I wondered if anyone has had similar problems, whether you can paint/apply a wash or sealer to these bricks....

will get some photos to put up, just really something to seal them as some of them are fairly old and damaged where the cement has been taken off and to keep them looking natural.

I am a bit puzzled because I thought fire bricks were only on the inside near the very hot bit.
