Fire grate advice

Hello

I am looking for some help please to identify the type of fire grate which would have sat in this surround which it has been suggested is Arts and Crafts.

It looks mock Tudor to me, or something like that. However I am not an expert, and Mims has suggested Arts and Crafts which encompassed Tudor revival and I know Mims has fantastic knowledge of that style. Is it stone or ceramic as the detail is quite low relief which looks a bit like it could be ceramic. I imagine it could have had a stand alone fire basket to match the Tudor style, but the shape of the fireback (milner fireback?) is more modern, so it might be a struggle to find a basket that fits, in which case a stand alone grate and bars may be the best option.

Something like this would fit, However I am not suggesting this exact one, just something like it!!!

Looking again, it probably wouldn't work as the grate is set down, so you would need a stand alone grate and bars without the ashpan cover! i'll post pics later unless anyone else comes up with better suggestions.

Lisa's fireplace does have a slightly ceramic look - certainly more so than the stone example we had at our last-but-one house. I tried to find a decent pic of that, but sadly literally the only one I have is not very good. It was taken a few days after we bought the place (Christmas 2007) and within a couple of months we had removed it and replaced it with something more suited to the size/height of the room :roll: As a result it really doesn't show the fire basket detail terribly well, but it was a free-standing one. Apologies for the mess.....as I said, we had only just moved in, lol!

The second pic is one of our fireplaces here - this room is in the 1924 Arts & Crafts style extension - and what I wanted to show was the fire basket, again free-standing and this time complete with integral candle sconces......

I'm sure ebay - a favourite shopping destination of mine - or a local reclamation yard will yield something appropriate for your handsome fireplace, Lisa!

Mims' suggestions are spot on (unsurprisingly). Your A&C fireplace would definitely have sported a dog grate, and judging by its apparent quality/cost, probably quite a fancy one.

Try looking on Google Images for dog grates. The world is your oyster!

Except I don't think it is possible to fit one in there as it has a ceramic fireback of some sort, so will need something wedge shaped to fit in the area that the grate will go into. I think the best idea is to fit some kind of small hearth in the bottom to make it level and use a grate that is shaped for the space.
