Hello PPUKers,
The rear first floor of our house is a cladded timber structure that has been inexplicably covered in roofing felt for over 40 years. We've pulled back some of the felt and miraculously the timber cladding appears to be in very good condition. Of course we don't know what we'll find when we remove all of it but it needs to be done since the guttering is all a bit of a mess and there are various other obsolete pipes that need to be removed.
We're hopeful (perhaps naively) that the cladding underneath will only need some repair and prepare work before a final finish is applied.
This is where I'm hoping that there is someone out there who can provide some insight into what would be the most appropriate. The house is a couple hundred meters from the sea in the south east and this northwest facing wall takes a battering when the wind and rain gets up.
We'd like the timber cladding to look like many of the traditional black weatherboarded properties in the area but the options available are bewildering. One builder we've spoken to has recommended a marine bituminous black paint but the manufacturers have told me that within a couple of months the finish will fade from a shiny deep black to more of a dull grey (much like paved roads do) so that is clearly not an option.
As always your thoughts and advice are most welcome.
Cheers,
Scott
