Finally! Kitchen finished...

Well after months of pure building hell (I can’t even get into it), we finally have our new kitchen in our Edwardian semi.

The old kitchen was in a cold, damp outhouse accessed by a dreadful 70s UPVC lean-to from the main house. We got rid of the lean-to, had a small extension built at the back to rearrange the floor space so that most of the outhouse was incorporated. A small section of the outhouse was left with the original roof to make a laundry / WC off the kitchen.

The cupboards and cabinets are actually a butler’s pantry that I bought off eBay - they came out of a 1930s Arts and Crafts Manor House and included the sink and teak draining board. We paid £150 for the lot.

The cabinets originally sat directly on top of the lower cupboards, so we made the corbels and raised them up to create a work surface. We actually designed the extension with this idea in mind - thank god it worked! The cabinets were so heavy we had to use a car jack to get them into place. We then used reclaimed panel trim to edge the bottom of the cabinets and painted everything white.

Fun fact - the sink in the laundry room was also an eBay find, and turned out to have belonged to Kenneth Graeme (as in, the house it came out of was once his, and had a blue plaque). I was delighted by this as The Wind In The Willows is my favourite book.

The flooring is Marmoleum i.e. linoleum. It smells lovely!

Very good. Most satisfying for you. Ingenious re-use of materials - always easier to cop out and buy new. A five-star job.

But is there a problem with the dog flap?

Yes, we're happy, though I'm still in that phase that everyone seems to be at the end of an episode of Grand Designs - still too traumatised from the experience to really love it yet.

Yes, the dog would love to have his own flap, but he would cause havoc, so he can whistle!*
