Hello All

I have recently begun painting our internal doors with F&B mahogany oil eggshell. Its a great colour, but it seems to be the worst colour for showing up imperfections in the doors. So much so that I am thinking of varnishing with a gloss varnish. This may sound counter-productive, but the way that the paint is showing the imperfections will, I think, be helped by a gloss finish.

Does anyone know whether there is any sort of varnish to avoid over F&B oil paint, or will ordinary yacht varnish be OK?

Any pointers gratefully received.

Leave it to dry - it takes a while for the 'glossiness' to wear off. Give it a few weeks and then see what you think.

I've been using F&B paints for decades as it resembles old-style paint that has a large amount of pigment held within it.
However, as in the olden days, preparation is all important and each coat of paint (apart from the final coat) needs to be rubbed down to produce a smooth finish.
Also more thin coats are better than fewer thick coats.

If you do use a varnish I suggest you rub down a test area first and see what you think.
