Another memento of our trip to Bradford on Avon.

If you walk a couple of miles downstream from Bradford, on the bank of the Avon, you come to a point where an aqueduct carries the Kennett & Avon canal over the river. At this point there's also a weir.

Right on the weir is the sad sight pictured below. A watermill that's obviously struggling to remain recognisable as such.

It would be a fabulous place to live. Anyone fancy a bit of a SAVE project?! (Actually I don't know whether SAVE knows about it).

Ooh, it's stiill got it's wheel so probably all it's inside bits too.
It's something the local Industrial Archaeological Society should know about, who owns it, if it's available etc etc...

Thanks for the interesting links, Gareth. I hadn't realised that the building on the opposite side of the river from my photo (where we sat and had a drink) had also been a mill. One of its tenants is now a rather "alternative" little shop, selling crystals and other mystical products.

Judging by some of the boat dwellers we saw on the canal, it probably does a roaring trade!

Behind the crinkly tin, there's a real beauty hiding away.
I was once told that all mills wih bits inside or wheels had been listed .. ah well. That one should be. Crinkly tin and all (that makes it that little bit different).
The first things I look for when there is a building beside a river like that are the wheel, or traces of one, head race and tail race.
Becomes a habit after a while.

Even better looking at the pics properly - the drive from the wheel is not usual - it's horizontal rather than vertical.

Tenants? In that building?

No, PM, I'm talking about the building on the opposite side of the weir (see Gareth's links). It no longer looks like a mill, and houses the shop I've mentioned, plus (I think) a private dwelling. And there's an adjacent pub.

I think you mean "most" unusual?

It wasn't a corn mill though and the gearing is clearly intended to massively increase the speed from the wheelshaft to the machinery (which was presumably driven by belt)

Any potential buyer would be well advised to get a survey done. I'm no expert, but there seems to be an awful lot of damp in their cellar.

Nothing that a bit of tanking couldn't sort out. A completely free, impartial and expert survey is what's needed.
