F & B paints

Certain Estate Agents in this area have suddenly started saying:
'Farrow and ball paints have been used throughout' in their property details. I am really not sure that that would encourage me to buy the house --grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I really like F+B colours and confess to using their French Grey on exterior woodwork. If you are looking for another estate agent annoyance, how about "Fired Earth".

Come on, admit it, you do like the colours don't you?

I have, however, heeded your warnings Joss regarding the apparent decline in quality and next time I paint I will be using Rose of Jericho I think.

I also used F & B in my previous house and liked them best (and Laura Ashley paint too). My brother has just painted his house with some of the dramatic greens from F & B and they look fantastic.

With my new house, I want to try the more environmentally-friendly paints but what annoys me is that I don't have a local stockist and I'm a bit resentful of paying lots of postage just to get various tester pots. A shop 5 mins walk away has paint from The Little Greene Company so I might try them. Mind you, The Green Shop seems to do a good range of paints so we might have a day out there.

Any paint historians about? Do F&B colours have any historic validity for exterior joinery?

I think some do - the ones John Fidler did for the NT range.

An Introduction to Historic Paint Technology
Date: Friday 9th November
Venue: The Imperial War Museum, Duxford, Oxfordshire

This course aims to provide all interested architects, surveyors, engineers, builders, conservation officers etc with the basics of traditional paint technology. The course will include practical demonstrations in using limewash, soft/glue size distemper, oil bound water paints, oil paints as well some later paints: emulsion, acrylic resin, silicates etc. Each demonstration will consider substrate preparation, constituent materials, application and post-application care.

The workshop sessions will be supplemented by illustrated lectures on The History of Paint, substrate compatibility and cleaning considerations.

I do like some of the F & B colours, it's just that I started using F & B about 10 years ago, and over a period of time I have noticed a change in the paint product itself, application seemed different and the overall effect seemed flatter and it seemed to have an element of plastic about it.

Other people on this site also noticed changes and we debated it about 4 years ago.

Five or so years ago I started to use Rose of Jericho, recognising its ( in my view) superior content and application. Also Francesca's Chalky Emulsions. Both have rather limited colour ranges but in all other respects they have stood up to my requirements:

Confidence in breathability
No flat looking block of colour
natural materials used
limited smell
no plastic

To me, this is a good criteria for use in an old house.

In this area there has been very little regard for the age of some properties and gut rip and strip seems to include F&B as the be all and end all, so appealing to the type of buyers we have here.

Never mind, each to his own----- Nemisis, I hope you will be pleased with Rose of jericho when it reaches your walls.

Actually I think I might make my own!

I do still like F and B oils for woodwork though - I haven't found anything which looks the same. I know not so eco friendly but we tend not to paint the woodwork often.

Have to agree....I thought their oil-based eggshell was amongst the best paint I have used.

It's also very tough I find - wipes down easily.
