Extremely narrow gap between houses

Hi everyone,
We are thinking about purchasing a semi detached Victorian house. However, there is no side access or space between the house and the next house apart from just a few inches. There is no way that anyone could get between the houses for any maintenance or anything. I am wondering if anyone else would be concerned about this or is it just me?

I guess the answer to that depends on what is in the back garden (or yard). If you've got half an acre of mixed woodland, borders and lawn, then it isn't going to work!! A few square metres of cobbles, and there is no issue.

How many inches is a few inches?
Is the gap small because it and the house next door were built like that? So, no gutter, no windows, no paintwork of any sort?

Or was it built in less crowded times, and another house later plonked alongside meaning that there may be features there that will need attention or maintenance ? That could indeed be a problem.

Otherwise, what might need doing... umm, the verge perhaps, or re-pointing. But it must be well sheltered from the weather. What else?

You can work off a very steep ladder if it's tied, or wedged against the adjacent building. Or a zig-zag scaffold need only be the width of your shoulders. Not the best working situation, but feasible.

As regards the back garden, same as a terrace house, bit of a pain. Been there done that.
