Extra Long Floorboards

I am looking for extra long floorboards - circa 20FT (as wide as possible also). Can anyone advise where is best to buy.

My current boards are red deal and I wonder is there a wood that will give a better richer finish?

Whereabouts do you live? Best to go to a sawmill.

Thoughts - cutting the board ends at 45 degrees and fastening through the overlapped board into a joist makes the joint almost invisible, much better than a straight butt cut. Sink the nail heads and sand over the joint a bit and you won't know it's not one long board

Wouldn't there be bits each side of the joist that were unsupported?

I see, now. I'd imagined the 45 degrees running from one side of the board to the other, rather than from top to bottom. Thanks for the brilliant diagram.

I think you'll be very lucky to get anything of that length - most softwoods stop at about 4.8m, though I did buy some 1.25" x 9" redwood last week in 5.4's. Best to compromise on one join per run and benefit from easier handling and fitting. Seek the advice of a good timber merchent - whereabouts are you?

Thanks to everybody for their responses. I saw full length boards in a Queen Anne house recently (they must have been 10Metres long and about a foot wide) and they looked absolutely incredible. It gave the room a continuity that you just don't get with a join!!

The house that I am doing is in the republic of Ireland. I have been told that my best option is to get an old beam cut up but I am loathe to do that. Surely there must be long boards from old barns?
