Hello, we have stone lintels above our windows and door on the front exterior of our cottage, built somewhen around 1800/1820. We have removed a modern porch which we don't want to replace and this has exposed the lintel above the front door. All the lintels are painted and the one above the door is a different colour to the lintels for the windows. I would rather not paint the lintels again as I think I would prefer to see the natural stone.
But I have two questions. Firstly, might stone lintels have been painted 200 or even 100 years ago, or is this a relatively modern trend. And how could I remove paint from the lintels and minimise any damage to the natural stone?
