External Painting

When the weather decides to behave itself I'm planning on painting the front of the house. I am planning to paint the sandstone areas around the sash windows with gloss and the rendered main area with a good external breathe able paint. At the moment a lot of the old paint on the sandstone is flaking. I am going to scrape as much of the loose paint off.
Can someone advise on a good external gloss paint and also a good undercoat to use under the gloss?

What style of house is yours? The best solution would be to strip the sandstone and leave it inpainted and limewash the render with something with a natural pigement. I think this would give the most pleasing appearance, as natural finishes always look nicer than synthetic ones. However it is a lot of work. Be careful when you scrape the stonework that you don't damage the stone as it can be quite soft. If you wish to strip the old paint then peelaway seems to work quite well.

However, it's your house........... the primer on bare stone must be an alkali resist such as

No undercoat.

If the wall is south-facing, use a light coloured finish so the sun won't destroy it.

But really, PP has given you better advice.

Most people posting on here about "stonework" and "gloss paint" are asking how to remove the stuff. Are you sure this is what you want to do? It won't be breathable.

Thank you very much for all your advice. I suppose I'm just looking for an easy solution. But I suppose by painting the sandstone with gloss would not be a good idea. When looking at the points raised.

I don't have a sandstone house but I painted my rendered house sandstone colour in silicate paint - so it's breathable and the silicate bonds itself into the stone so in theory should not crack/flake/peel in future - ever.

I would seriously consider something like that if you are going to be there for a long time - silicates in theory last hundreds of years without needing to be repainted - they're not cheap but cheaper than doing the job and then re-painting again in 10 years. Keim, Beeck or Earthborn make them. Also they don't give off fumes like gloss, which gives me headaches after a day painting

I was worried about the painted stucco on my house until I discovered that it wasn't stucco, it was cement. However, even so I used masonry paint on that, not gloss, which I would think would not give a good effect.

But, as above, if your house is sandstone then PLEASE don't put anything impervious over it - you or your future purchasers would regret it eventually.
