Exterior Swedish Linseed Paints wot I have used!

Its probably not very PC but I feel the need to mention I have recently painted my new cheap little overlap shed with RodFarg Swedish linseed based paints - these are the ones used in Sweden on those Red houses and this paint is truly excellent I have to tell you.Plus the customer service is superb.The paint comes in about 4-5 colors and you only need 2 coats. each coat dries in 1 hour.The finish is gloriously matt. I now have a black shed with white door and window frame its looks a treat. When ,eventually,( credit crunch permitting) I get the building work done and the clapboard needs treating i may well use these paints again. Apologies for the recomendation but...hopefully somone else might find it helpful.

Nothing wrong with that choice! Holkham Linseed paints were researched in Sweden.

The shed will be assured of a long life and probably looks great.

Sounds good. Where can you by it ? Does it have to go onto bare wood or can you rub down and paint over old paintwork? How long does in last before it needs redoing?
I have another posting on this site about my beach hut roof. Painting the exterior of the hut will be another job,I'll have to look at come the spring and this might be the answer. Do you think it will wear well in a seafront location?

Hi - Google it under Falurödfärg - once into the site select English version
or alternatively [www.falurodfarg.com] and after 2 coats it lasts 10 - 15 years before it needs repainting. If I'd been really brave I'd have used the Traditional red but opted instead for teh more discreet Black and used Holkham Linseed to paint the window frame - looks very cute and when my wildflower meadow which I've sown (by Julys new Moon) instead of Grass in my garden flowers next year it will be surrounded by Ox Eye daises and Wild carrot!! Call me romantic - really its so I can look at this instead of my ongoing cottage building project!

Not just researched - it's made in Sweden by Allback.

The useful thing about Falun Red paints is the high copper content which makes it very fungicidal.

'Falu Rödfärg Paint is a water-based exterior wood paint made by Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB (now Stora Enso) in Sweden. What makes Falu Rödfärg Paint so special is that it is made from the naturally-existing pigments in the earth which can only be found in the copper mine in Falun, Sweden. These pigments have a unique mineral composition which includes iron ochre, silicon dioxide, copper and zinc, all of which help preserve and protect wood and also produce the distinctive, natural colours of Falu Rödfärg Paint.

Only paint with a minimum of 18% pigment (15% at least for spray applications) sourced from the Falun mine in Sweden may be sold as Genuine Falu Rödfärg Paint.'

Perhaps I am a wee bit confused here, which is not unusual.

As far as I can make out, the paint that this thread refers to is a water and pigment distemper, made into an emulsion with soap and linseed oil. Is this not quite a bit different from a normal linseed oil paint where the pigment and the linseed oil are the prime ingredients?

Does this affect the properties of the paint? And if so is it for better or worse?

Not very up on chemistry but what I can say is that my clapboard was something of a disappointment with respect to the quality of the wood used etc - (it definitley the case that you get what you pay for with Sheds) Being short of cash I figured to use the best protection I could find for it in the hope that it may last 2 years max. I have put on two coats of paint and used Holkham Sea Mist on the door and window. In the torrential rain of recent weeks the shed showed no weakness (other people I have spoken to who paid similarly low price for shed said first storms made the thin wood slats come apart :shock: I have a hunch that its the paint thats holding my shed up at the moment and for that I'm grateful!!!

That's good to know. I was about to buy a cheap shed then I looked at the quality and decided better to have the wood cut and make one. I will need black paint, so this sounds useful stuff.
