exterior painting

I have a property dating from around 1879 originally, but during the last 20 years the front of the property was converted to add a shop and since being changed now has in place of lovely sash windows, and stone front, a pebbledashed exterior and some ugly upvc windows in its place. Whilst I fear that in the near future I will not be able to restore the property fully to its former glory owing to the alterartions, could somebody recomen a colour that would best suit and improve the external of the premises

Oh, dear! It's been pretty successfully disguised as an example of the worst sort of municipal housing, hasn't it?

I'm prepared to stand corrected, but my gut reaction would be to replace those *********** (!!!!!!!) windows.

I've yet to see a painted pebble-dashed house that doesn't look scruffy after quite a short time.

This is how the house used to look, I bought it because of the potential and internal dimensions, and well there are some period features but im hoping to restore more with time.

This pic was taken i believe around the 60's before being converted and and nocked about into a shop and back again. You can see all the original sash windows, and the building is entirely built from locally sourced stone, I believe it dates from around 1876 based on newspaper clippings found pasted to the basement ceiling

Any suggestions for its current fasard much appreciated.

Thank goodness the poor house now has you to look after it.

Having seen the older photo, there can't be any question about sorting out the windows. And in the process, of course, there'll be an opportunity to test the tenacity of the pebbledash.
I know that removing the stuff from brick walls can do nasty things to the surface, but perhaps stone would survive the process better. There's bound to be someone on the forum who knows.

Yes - grim I agree! Especially the ground floor, which are about the ugliest windows ever designed IMHO - and you see them everywhere.

The problem is that under that pebbledash I suspect is a large area of breezeblock or brick infill - where shop windows may have been removed. So be aware that it may not be a simple matter of removal and replacement of windows. However, it may be possible to remove, replace windows with something more appealing, and re-render in something more appropriate. Otherwise, a good stonemason is recommended. When you do eventually decide that you are in a position to do the job properly, then it would be worth employing an architect with some sympathy for period buildings. The cost will be worth it in the long term.

Pebbledash is hard to paint, and I'm not sure that painted pebbledash looks a great deal better than the raw stuff. Clearly there are no issues here now with breathability, as the pebbledash will be impermeable (until it eventually cracks). So if you do really hate it, then a stone paint (mineral paint may be worth investigating) in an off-white or stone colur may tone it down a bit. Don't be tempted with the sort with 'bits' in which hold the dirt.

The windows - well, you could try painting with a softer colour to blend them in a bit - you may be limited in what you can use which will stick to the uPVC though. Have a look at ranges made for uPVC and consider if any are better than the stark white.
