Exterior Fretwork

Have almost completed Victorian Cottage renovation..alot of local properties have what I call gingerbread looking wooden fretwork to them..Does any one know where I might find someone or a company that does this .. am in the East Anglia region. Have enquired locally with no luck

Would it be possible to make your own? (Much cheaper!) You could take a pattern from one of the neighbouring houses and cut it out with a jigsaw. Experts like Biff will be able to tell you what sort of wood to use, and how to finish it.

No, sorry. I'm in Suffolk - miles away! The chap I was thinking of wouldn't be interested geographically.

Before spending a heap of cash though - if the cottage didn't have these originally, then it may look a spot OTT if you add them now.

You may not know how to do it, but trust me, its incredibly easy. I used to cut wood patterns when I was 9, on a fretsaw from the 1800s.

Get yourself a fretsaw and bit of sheet wood scrap and just play, you'll be confident in no time.

When doing the final item, stick your paper pattern to the wood with wallpaper paste, then there wont be any movement or tearing while cutting.

... then youve lost a bit of scrap wood. Or on the final, a £8 sheet of wood. Horror!!

If you're making a giant pattern and manage to screw up (which isnt that easy to do), cut the sheet and join some more on.
