Exterior beam painting question

All,

I am in the process of repainting the exterior of our 16C cottage. I am using silicate based paint for the panels, but the exterior beams also need some attention.

The former owner told us he used linseed oil but the beams have obviously been painted at some stage in the past and are desperately in need of tidying up.

Any suggestions as to the best material to repaint / retreat these?

If you really must paint them, then only use a real linseed oil paint.
