exchanging contracts , registration fee?

we are just about to exchange contracts but our solicitor says he needs a registration fee of 200 quid.
is this to register the house owner changes with the land registry?

i had a look on the land registry web site but couldn't make heads nor tails from the options they give for registration.

That'll be £50 for handling the paperwork, plus the actual registration fee. Solicitors need to make a living.

We've always gone fixed-fee conveyancing. It's money for old rope (I come from a legal family) and I wouldn't pay for the added value of an expensive solicitor.

robgil - I do hope this isn't going to sound patronising, but why are you asking us about this charge? Surely your best bet is to ask your solicitor.

I'm not saying that just to be arsey. I'm just trying to emphasise that solicitors should be no different from the rest of the world when charging their clients/customers. They should (and, I'm sure, do) expect to have to justify their fees and charges. It does seem, however, that some people feel it's a bit 'vulgar' to question legal charges.

If your solicitor says anything, does anything, or charges you for anything, that you don't understand, look him/her in the eye and say "could you please explain that for me?".

cheers guys , penners old chap i was only asking what it was for , not why i was being charged it. this is all new to me and i have no idea what to expect so , everything that comes along is unexpected. i did think that by paying our solicitor what i thought was an all inclusive fee that there wouldn't be any more charges to pay unless something out of the ordinary cropped up , so when we get a letter stating that we need to pay a fee we automatically think something out of the ordinary has cropped up and alarm bells start to ring as a result. i have no problems with paying the guy for his work , i just like to know what i am paying for because i can then ask my self if i could do it my self and there for save a few quid , which i really need to be doing because we really over spent on the house leaving very little for the restoration work. its actually quite scary thinking about the amount of work we need to do and the little money we have to do it on.
throw in a 9 month time limit as opposed to our initial 'it will take as long as it takes' attitude and you can understand why i need to concentrate on making ends meet to get things ready in time.

Sympathise with the overspending on the house not having what's necessary for restoration - snap. That must happen so often!

thanks joce&chris , we knew we were overspending and thought we could manage it with an unlimited time frame , things change though eh?. still , its all just a small part of the big picture of life ,we are both really looking forward to it now.
