I think it's rather sad that Evelyn and others have dismissed the new style forum out of hand.

Evelyn has an awful amount of knowlege that she has shared in the past.

But they are all grown ups and free to choose.

I think this style is a vast improvement.

The only thing I miss is the old profile page, which allowed you to get a better idea of what contributors are up to.

So long as people update their profile you can access it by clicking on the profile button from within one of their posts, I can see you are a FD who likes messing with clocks... Very easy!!!!

I agree. Evelyn gets a bit hot under the collar sometimes, but you can't fault her passion for period buildings. Or her knowledge of planning procedures and all such things.

I think/hope she'll migrate here in the end.

I'm rather sad she's decided agin this, as she's got a lot to contribute (and she manages to make me laugh, which is rare online).
Still, it's her call.
I have to say, however, that it's jolly quiet in here...

The old profile section allowed photos and some free text. As for Evelyn, I was hoping to provoke some response and lure her onto the new site. She hasnt taken the bait yet, so presumably she hasnt retried the new forum.

Not using the forum because it has changed format is a bit like saying you won't drive a car because the manufacturer now insists upon using pneumatic tyres.

The old forum was dreadful. The world had not seen anything so backward since Ug the caveman and his mates used to scrawl pictorial messages for each other on a convenient cave wall.

The only niggle I have is that I had to re-register because the system did not recognise me.

The one downside of the new forum is that it is fast and efficient, so I no longer have time to go to London, come back, have a nice cup of tea and a biscuit and watch some television before the pages change.

Come back Evelyn, it's only progress!!!

It is a pity that some of the old contributors have decided not to join the move to the new forum, for sure their contribution will be missed. However if one really thinks about these things, restoring a preiod property or securing their future is not something just for the current generation, and for it to be meaningful following generations have to also become involved, one way of ensuring that is to provide information in a format which is easy for them to use. The new forum is such a way. Unfortunately it means that those who are less used to the new technologies can feel alienated (or they can try and adapt - my 84 year old grandfather just finished his computer course), so the decision is does the forum move forward and try to keep attracting new input, or does it stay with the old format which will alienate the younger generation in the same way that the new format alienates the older generation?

This new format is fantastic and just what is required to stop the needless spam....

If people don't want to use the format then that is upto them.

Having lobbied Period Property to replace the old forum by a proper bulletin board, I welcome the change heartily. Now all they have to do is setup some more defined forums on listing, surveys, lime, windows.

I'm not sure I agree with you about splitting up the forum into very specific topics.

One of the common factors about people who use this forum is that they all have a wide-ranging interest in all aspects of period properties and their conservation. It's interesting and informative to be able to see the variety of problems that we all encounter, without having to dodge about from one forum to another all the time.

I'm with Moo and Penners there. I use another forum that is split up but it's a very different set of subjects. Old buildings call for a holistic approach, not pigeonholing.

The walls are full of small holes containing small birds manufacturing even more small birds. the roofs (?rooves?) are full of bod sh** the insulation material is now guano coloured.I wonder if I could sell it?

We've got starlings in the attic, jackdaws in the chimney, sparrows under the eaves, swallows, wrens, blue tits, blackbirds and bats in the barn, barn owls in the owls box and elephants under the rhubarb.

We do, we have some Gunnera, which is like giant rhubarb, growing on Duck Island.

The birds are great at all times except at sunrise, when they start twittering away, and our nest of Starlings must be enormous the amount of noise they make, it wakes me each day.
