Eveing class in heritage skills in Skipton, Yorkshire

Apologies to moderators if I am not allowed to promote such things. I did check the FAQs and found no guidance.

Anyone within driving distance of Skipton in North Yorkshire might be interested to know that Craven College is starting an evening class in the new year introducing people to what they call heritage crafts. It consists of timber framing, herringbone brickwork(?), and of course the use of lime for mortars and plasters. It is a 10 week course.

Pity it's not just that bit nearer - I'd be there like a shot! I'd love to do joinery. My mother-in-law did stained glass, we've got some very pretty things she made but she cut her fingers to ribbons and gave up. A lot of these skills seem to require a high pain threshold!

I know Bishop Grosseteste in Lincoln do that heritage degree too, very tempting but husband says I'm not allowed another pointless degree just to potter round and feed chickens!

Interesting name. Could the origin be anything to do with a member of the clergy with rather large, nay, huge, er, well, you know. :shock:

Locally it's just known as Bishop Grot.

I eagerly rushed off to the Craven College site but it looks like one either has to be pretty skilled for the higher levels or employed by a builder for the lower levels.

Hopefully I am wrong and there are some courses available for me.

The evening classes they do are for everybody. The Introduction to Heritage Skills is due to start in January and is will be running on Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm. It was due to start last week but only 2 people enrolled for it (including myself). I think they need at least 8 people. I have switched to the Intro to Joinery class for the time being.

The link to Craven College posted above will take you to a list of the courses but there is little or no detailed info on the site.

It's probably best to phone the construction centre on 01756 708932.

I found out about it through the Yorkshire page of the NHTG: http://www.nhtg.org.uk/regionsandhomecountries/yorkshumber/

Amazon Nails in Todmorden also do lime and clay courses, but they are more strawbale focussed. They are listed as training providers on the NHTG website.
